What great Laravel Developers look like
Excellent Laravel developers use the framework’s strengths — Eloquent, queues, events, policies, notifications — without letting controllers and models become bloated. They write Pest tests for business rules, keep queries efficient, upgrade Laravel versions regularly and know when to reach for packages and when to write focused code.
Questions we ask in technical interviews
- How do you avoid N+1 queries with Eloquent?
- How do you structure a large Laravel app?
- When would you use Livewire versus Inertia?
- How do you scale queue workers?
Typical projects for Laravel Developers
- SaaS products and portals
- Laravel version upgrades
- Admin panels with Filament
- APIs for mobile apps
The first 30 days with a new Laravel developer
Every engagement starts with a short, structured onboarding so you see useful output early and can judge fit quickly. A typical first month looks like this:
-
Week 1 — Setup
Runs the app with Sail or Docker, reviews models, queues, jobs and routes, and fixes a small bug.
-
Week 2 — Feature
Builds a feature with form requests, policies, migrations and Pest or PHPUnit tests.
-
Week 3 — Performance
Finds N+1 queries and slow jobs with Telescope or logs and fixes the worst ones.
-
Week 4 — Ownership
Owns a release and documents deployment steps in Forge, Vapor or your pipeline.
What to look for beyond the CV
Years of experience and a list of technologies say little about how someone works. In our screening and in your interviews, these are the signals that matter most:
- Uses Eloquent well and spots N+1 queries
- Puts authorisation in policies, not scattered checks
- Knows queues, scheduling and failed-job handling
- Keeps up with Laravel releases and upgrades regularly
- Writes tests for business rules, not only happy paths
Laravel for your next project?
Laravel is one of the most productive frameworks for business applications, portals and SaaS products. For project delivery rather than staffing, see Laravel development.
Choosing how to engage a Laravel developer
| Model | How it works | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Single augmented developer | One Laravel engineer joins your team, stand-ups and repository | You have a tech lead and a clear backlog |
| Small Laravel pod | Two or three developers plus a part-time lead and QA | You need a feature area or product module delivered end to end |
| Fixed-scope project | Agreed scope, milestones and price after discovery | The work is well defined, such as an upgrade or an admin panel |
| Ongoing maintenance | A monthly allowance of hours for fixes, updates and small features | The application is live and needs steady care |
Most clients start with one model and switch as the work changes; we make that easy.
If you are weighing these options more broadly, our guide to outsourcing vs staff augmentation explains the trade-offs.
Red flags when hiring Laravel developers
- Business logic packed into controllers and Blade templates with no service or action classes
- No experience with queues, so slow work such as emails and imports runs inside web requests
- Raw SQL concatenated from user input instead of Eloquent bindings or the query builder
- Unfamiliar with migrations and seeders, or edits the production database by hand
- Has never written a feature test with Pest or PHPUnit
- Cannot explain how they would upgrade an application across several major Laravel versions
A sample brief for a Laravel engagement
A short, specific brief helps us match the right person in days rather than weeks. A useful brief covers:
- Application: what it does, who uses it and roughly how many users and records it handles
- Versions: current Laravel and PHP versions, and any planned upgrade
- Stack around it: front end (Blade, Livewire, Inertia with Vue or React), database, hosting (Forge, Vapor, AWS, shared hosting)
- First goals: the three outcomes you need in the first two months
- Working setup: overlap hours, tools (GitHub, Jira, Slack) and who the developer reports to

Keeping a remote Laravel developer productive
Laravel work moves fastest when the developer can run the application locally on day one. We ask for a working local setup (Laravel Sail, Herd or Docker), seed data that does not contain real customer information, and access to staging and error monitoring. With those in place, the developer can reproduce bugs, write feature tests and open small pull requests from the first week.
Across time zones, we agree a daily overlap window of a few hours for stand-ups, code review and questions, and keep the rest of the day for focused work. Pull requests carry a short description, screenshots for UI changes and notes on migrations or queue changes, so reviewers in another time zone can approve them without a meeting. Releases are scheduled inside the overlap window, so someone on your side is available if a deployment needs attention.
We also recommend a written definition of done: tests passing, static analysis clean, migrations reversible, documentation updated. It keeps quality consistent whether the reviewer is in the same city or ten hours away.
Ways to engage
| Model | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time dedicated | 40 hours a week on your work | Ongoing product development |
| Part-time | 20 hours a week | Maintenance and smaller roadmaps |
| Team | Several specialists with a lead | New products and workstreams |
