Why mobile app maintenance matters

Mobile apps live in a moving environment. Apple and Google release major OS versions every year, change store policies regularly and require apps to target recent SDK versions to remain available or updatable. Third-party SDKs for payments, maps, analytics and login deprecate old versions on their own schedules.

An app left untouched for a year or two can start crashing on new devices, lose features when SDKs are retired or be blocked from publishing updates. Regular maintenance prevents these surprises and keeps ratings healthy.

Problems we solve

  • Crashes or layout issues on the newest iPhones or Android versions
  • Google Play warnings about target API level requirements
  • Payment, login or map SDKs approaching end of support
  • Falling store ratings with no one monitoring reviews
  • The original developer is no longer available

What’s included

OS readiness

Testing on beta OS releases and fixes before public launch.

SDK & dependency updates

Keeping third-party libraries current and secure.

Crash & performance monitoring

Crashlytics or Sentry reviewed weekly; issues fixed by impact.

Store compliance

Privacy forms, target SDK requirements and policy changes handled.

Backend & API upkeep

Server, database and API maintenance behind the app.

Small improvements

A monthly allowance for enhancements and fixes from user feedback.

Taking over an existing app

If we did not build your app, maintenance starts with an onboarding review: access to source code, developer accounts, signing certificates, backend hosting and third-party services; a build on current tooling; a review of crash reports and store warnings; and an assessment of dependencies. You receive a short report with immediate risks and a maintenance plan. Missing pieces — such as lost signing keys or undocumented servers — are identified early, while there is still time to recover them.

Maintenance plans

Plan Includes
Essential OS and SDK updates, crash monitoring, store compliance, critical fixes
Standard Essential plus a monthly enhancement allowance and backend maintenance
Product A part-time or dedicated team for continuous improvement

Plans are billed monthly with agreed response times, and you can change or cancel them as needs change.

The yearly mobile maintenance calendar

Mobile platforms move on a predictable rhythm, so much of maintenance can be planned rather than reactive:

When What happens What to do
Early summer Apple and Google announce new OS versions and betas Test the app on betas and plan required changes
Late summer / autumn New iOS and Android versions release; new devices launch Ship compatibility updates and fix layout issues on new screens
Through the year Store policies and target API level requirements update Raise target SDKs and update privacy disclosures before deadlines
Continuously Third-party SDKs and libraries release fixes Update dependencies in small, regular batches

Timing is typical and varies by year.

Metrics that show app health

  • Crash-free users and sessions — the most direct measure of stability, tracked per release.
  • App start time — slow launches drive abandonment, especially on older devices.
  • ANR rate (Android) — “app not responding” events affect store visibility.
  • Store ratings and reviews — often the first place regressions show up.
  • API error rates — back-end problems frequently look like app bugs to users.

We review these after every release and monthly overall, and use staged rollouts so a problem reaches a small share of users before it is caught. A maintenance report shows what was updated, what was fixed and what is coming up — so app health is visible to the business, not just the developers.

What a maintenance retainer typically covers

Area Typical scope
Monitoring Crash and performance alerts reviewed daily or weekly
Updates OS compatibility, SDK and dependency updates, target API changes
Fixes Bug fixes with agreed response times by severity
Releases Builds, store submissions and staged rollouts
Improvements A monthly allowance of hours for small enhancements
Reporting Monthly summary of health, work done and upcoming changes

Scope and response times are agreed per client; these are typical inclusions.

How we prioritise maintenance work

Priority Examples Typical response
Critical App crashes on launch, login or payments broken, security issue Same day
High Key feature failing for many users, store policy deadline Within a few days
Normal Minor bugs, small improvements Planned into the next release
Low Cosmetic issues, nice-to-have tweaks Backlog

Typical targets; actual response times are agreed in your maintenance plan.

Store policy changes you cannot ignore

Apple and Google change their rules regularly, and apps that do not keep up can be blocked from updating or removed from search. Typical recurring tasks include:

  • Updating Android apps to target recent API levels by Google’s yearly deadlines
  • Building with recent Xcode and iOS SDK versions when Apple requires them
  • Keeping privacy labels, the Data safety form and privacy manifests accurate
  • Adapting to changes in payment, subscription and account deletion rules
  • Renewing certificates, provisioning profiles and push notification keys before they expire

Release management for a maintained app

  1. Plan

Group fixes and small improvements into a regular release rhythm, often every two to four weeks.

  2. Test

Automated tests plus checks on real devices for the most-used journeys.

  3. Roll out gradually

Staged rollouts on Google Play and phased releases on the App Store.

  4. Watch & respond

Monitor crash rates and reviews for the first days and pause if needed.

When maintenance turns into modernisation

Sometimes small fixes are no longer enough: the framework is several major versions behind, the code has no tests and each change breaks something else. At that point we recommend a planned mobile app modernisation rather than paying for the same problems every month. We will tell you when that point arrives, with the reasons in writing.

Signs your app needs a maintenance partner

  • Nobody has released an update in months
  • Crash reports are not being reviewed
  • The original developer is no longer available
  • Store warnings or policy emails are arriving
  • Users report problems after a new iOS or Android release

Starting with a short audit gives you a clear picture of risks and a prioritised list of fixes before any monthly commitment.

What a maintenance audit covers

  • Build check: can the app still be built and signed from source today?
  • Dependency review: outdated, abandoned or vulnerable libraries
  • Store compliance: target API levels, SDK versions and privacy declarations
  • Stability: crash and performance data from the last few months
  • Access: who holds the store accounts, keys and back-end credentials

Handing maintenance between teams

If you later move maintenance in-house or to another partner, the transition should be painless. We keep documentation, credentials ownership and release notes up to date throughout the engagement, so a handover is a short knowledge-transfer session rather than a rescue project.

For apps that need new features as well as upkeep, maintenance can sit alongside a small mobile development retainer with one shared backlog.

One backlog keeps priorities clear: urgent fixes always come first, and improvements are scheduled around them.

Older or unstable apps may need mobile app modernization. See also mobile app testing.

FAQ

App Maintenance FAQ

Still have questions? Talk to a solutions architect — free, no obligation.

Can you maintain an app another company built?
Yes. We start with an onboarding review and then move the app onto a monthly plan.
What if we lost the source code or signing keys?
We help recover what is possible. Lost iOS certificates can be regenerated; Android signing keys may be recoverable if Play App Signing was used.
Do you maintain Flutter and React Native apps?
Yes, as well as native Swift and Kotlin apps.
How much does app maintenance cost?
Plans depend on app complexity and the enhancement allowance. You receive a fixed monthly quote after the onboarding review.
