Why Django
Django is a high-level Python framework that includes an ORM, authentication, an automatic admin interface, forms, security protections and much more. Its “batteries included” approach lets teams build robust applications quickly without assembling dozens of libraries.
Because it is Python, Django fits naturally with data, analytics and AI work — the same team can build the web application and the machine learning or data pipelines behind it.
When Django is the right choice
| Details | |
|---|---|
| Great fit | Business applications, content platforms, SaaS back ends, data-driven and AI-enabled products |
| Consider alternatives | Tiny APIs where FastAPI is lighter, or real-time-heavy apps where Node.js may be simpler |

Django REST Framework APIs for web and mobile apps.
Admin back offices
Customised Django admin for operations teams.
Upgrades
Older Django versions upgraded to current LTS releases.
Our Django toolkit
Django admin as a business tool
Django’s built-in admin can be a powerful internal tool when customised well: filtered lists, bulk actions, inline editing, dashboards and permission-based views. For many operations teams it replaces a separate admin application entirely, saving weeks of development. We tailor it carefully so it remains safe and pleasant to use.
Django or FastAPI?
Both are excellent Python frameworks, and we use both. The choice depends on what you are building.
| Django | FastAPI | |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Batteries included: ORM, admin, auth, forms, migrations | Lightweight, async-first, automatic OpenAPI docs |
| Best for | Data-rich business applications, CMS-like products, back offices | High-throughput APIs, ML model serving, microservices |
| Admin interface | Built in and highly customisable | Needs a separate tool |
| Learning curve | More to learn, strong conventions | Smaller surface, more decisions left to you |
The Django admin as a competitive advantage
Django’s admin is one of the most underrated features in web development. With a few lines of configuration, operations teams get a secure interface to search, filter, edit and export data. We customise it with role-based permissions, inline editing, bulk actions and audit trails so internal teams can run the business from day one — often removing the need for a separate back-office build in the first release. For customer-facing interfaces, we pair Django REST Framework or Django Ninja APIs with a React, Vue or mobile front end.
Scaling Django in production
- Celery or Django-Q workers for emails, reports and other background jobs, so requests stay fast.
- Query optimisation with select_related, prefetch_related and database indexes, monitored through APM traces.
- Redis caching for expensive views and fragments.
- Async views and Django Channels where real-time features such as notifications or chat are needed.
- Containerised deployment with Gunicorn or Uvicorn behind a load balancer, with migrations run safely in CI/CD.
Security features Django gives you
Django is known for secure defaults, which is one reason it is popular in regulated industries. Out of the box it protects against SQL injection through its ORM, cross-site scripting through automatic template escaping, cross-site request forgery with CSRF tokens and clickjacking with frame headers. It hashes passwords with strong algorithms and supports multi-factor authentication through well-maintained packages. We add security headers, dependency scanning, rate limiting, audit logging and regular upgrades to supported Django releases — LTS versions receive security fixes for around three years, which makes upgrade planning predictable.
Django versions and long-term support
Django follows a predictable release cycle. Every third feature release is a long-term support (LTS) version that receives security fixes for roughly three years, while other releases are supported for a shorter window. For most business applications we recommend building on the current LTS release and planning upgrades from one LTS to the next.
| Situation | Our recommendation |
|---|---|
| New project | Start on the latest LTS (or the current release if a needed feature is only there) with an upgrade plan |
| On an older LTS still in support | Upgrade during a quiet period; deprecation warnings guide the work |
| On an unsupported version | Prioritise an upgrade — security fixes have stopped |
| Python 2 / very old Django | Treat as a modernisation project with tests added first |
Check the official Django release roadmap for exact support dates.
Testing and quality in Django projects
Django ships with a capable test framework, and we pair it with tools that make tests fast and readable. Every project gets automated tests for models, business rules, permissions and API endpoints, running in CI on each pull request.
- pytest-django for concise, parallel tests
- factory_boy for realistic test data without fragile fixtures
- Coverage reports focused on business logic rather than chasing 100%
- Playwright for critical end-to-end user journeys
- Ruff and mypy (with django-stubs) for linting and type checking
- Security checks such as
manage.py check --deployand dependency scanning
Deploying Django
Django runs well almost anywhere. The right choice depends on your team, traffic patterns and existing cloud.
| Option | Good for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Platform as a service (Render, Heroku, Railway) | Small teams and early products | Less control; costs rise with scale |
| Containers on AWS ECS, Azure Container Apps or Cloud Run | Most production business apps | Some infrastructure setup, defined as code |
| Kubernetes | Organisations already running Kubernetes | Operational overhead if it is your only workload |
| Virtual machines | Legacy hosting or strict on-premise needs | More manual patching and scaling |
Whatever the platform, we serve the app with Gunicorn or Uvicorn, run background work with Celery or RQ, store media in object storage and keep configuration in environment variables.
Common Django mistakes we fix
- N+1 queries hidden in templates and serializers — solved with select_related, prefetch_related and query monitoring
- Business logic scattered across views, signals and templates instead of services or model methods
- Long-running work done inside web requests instead of background tasks
- Migrations edited after deployment, leaving environments out of sync
- Settings files with secrets committed to the repository
- Admin used as the customer-facing interface without proper permissions

Building APIs with Django
Most modern Django projects expose an API for a React, Vue or mobile front end. Django REST Framework remains the most widely used option, with mature serializers, authentication, permissions, throttling and browsable documentation. Django Ninja offers a lighter, type-hint-driven style similar to FastAPI while keeping the Django ORM and admin.
| Need | Our usual choice |
|---|---|
| Large API with complex permissions | Django REST Framework with viewsets and custom permission classes |
| Fast, typed API with OpenAPI docs | Django Ninja |
| Real-time updates | Django Channels with Redis |
| GraphQL | Strawberry or Graphene where clients need flexible queries |
| API documentation | OpenAPI schema generated from code (drf-spectacular or Ninja built-in) |
Whichever we choose, we version the API, validate every input, paginate list endpoints and document authentication so other teams can integrate without guessing.
Questions we ask at the start of a Django project
- Which users and roles need access, and does the Django admin cover any of them?
- Which data already exists, and where does it need to be migrated from?
- Which external systems must the application talk to?
- What are the expected traffic peaks and background workloads?
- Who will host and maintain the application after launch?
