Platform options
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| WooCommerce + marketplace plugin | Small marketplaces, tight budgets | Performance and customization limits at scale |
| Shopify + marketplace app | Brands adding third-party sellers | App fees and limited vendor control |
| Custom marketplace | Unique rules, services marketplaces, high growth | Higher initial investment |
We recommend the lightest option that fits your business model and growth plans, and design so you can move to custom later.
Payments done properly
Marketplace payments are more complex than a normal store: money comes in from buyers, your commission is taken, sellers are paid out, and refunds and chargebacks must be handled across parties. We typically use Stripe Connect, which handles seller onboarding, identity checks and payouts, and keeps you out of holding funds directly.
Launching your marketplace
Marketplaces rarely fail because of technology; they fail because one side of the market does not show up. A focused launch helps. Start with a narrow category or location where you can personally recruit the first sellers, and make onboarding as easy as possible — import tools for product catalogues, help writing listings and quick approval. Seed the marketplace with enough quality listings that the first buyers find something worth buying.
On the buyer side, SEO-friendly category and listing pages bring organic traffic over time, while targeted campaigns and partnerships bring early demand. Measure liquidity — the share of listings that sell or receive enquiries within a set period — because it tells you whether both sides are getting value. The software should make all of this measurable from the first day.
Marketplace operations dashboard
Running a marketplace means managing two sets of customers. Your operations team needs one place to approve new vendors, review and moderate listings, handle disputes and refunds, adjust commission rates, monitor payouts and spot problems such as slow-shipping sellers or unusual order patterns. We build an operations dashboard alongside the customer-facing marketplace, with role-based access for support, finance and management.
The chicken-and-egg problem
Every marketplace faces the same early challenge: buyers come for supply, and sellers come for demand. Software alone does not solve it, but it can make the strategy easier. Most successful marketplaces start narrow — one category, one region or one customer type — so a small number of sellers can create a genuinely useful offering.
- Seed supply first — onboard a core group of sellers manually and make their first listings excellent.
- Make onboarding effortless — bulk product imports, simple verification and clear payout terms.
- Provide single-player value — tools sellers find useful even before buyers arrive, such as storefronts or booking management.
- Measure liquidity — track how often a buyer search ends in a purchase; it is the clearest signal of marketplace health.
Seller onboarding and trust
A marketplace is only as trustworthy as its weakest seller. Onboarding must balance speed with checks that protect buyers and your brand.
| Stage | What the platform handles |
|---|---|
| Application | Business details, categories, sample products and terms acceptance |
| Verification | Identity and business checks through your payment provider’s onboarding (KYC) |
| Listing | Bulk upload, templates, image guidelines and listing quality checks |
| Approval | Manual or rule-based review of new sellers and first listings |
| Ongoing | Ratings, response times, dispute rates and automatic flags for poor performance |
Commission and pricing models
How you charge shapes seller behaviour and your revenue. Many marketplaces combine models, and the software should make it easy to change them as you learn.
| Model | How it works | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Commission per sale | A percentage of each transaction | Aligns your income with seller success; requires payments through the platform |
| Subscription | Sellers pay a monthly fee | Predictable revenue; harder to attract new sellers early |
| Listing fees | Charge per listing or per featured placement | Simple; can reduce catalogue size |
| Buyer fees | Service fee added at checkout | Common in services marketplaces; must be transparent |
| Advertising | Sponsored listings and promotions | Becomes valuable once traffic is meaningful |
Disputes, returns and moderation
Problems will happen between buyers and sellers, and how the platform handles them determines whether people return. We build structured workflows so issues are resolved consistently rather than through ad hoc emails.
- Order-level messaging between buyer and seller, visible to your support team
- Return and refund requests with reasons, evidence uploads and deadlines
- Escrow or delayed payouts until delivery or service completion is confirmed
- Content moderation for listings, images and reviews, with reporting tools
- Audit trail of every action for fair decisions and chargeback responses
Scaling beyond the first version
Early marketplaces often launch on a configurable platform or a WooCommerce or Shopify setup with multi-vendor extensions. That is a sensible way to test demand. As volume grows, custom requirements around search, payouts, seller tools and data usually justify a purpose-built platform. We design the first version so data can be migrated cleanly when that time comes.

Seller tools that keep sellers active
Sellers stay on marketplaces that make them money with little effort. The seller dashboard is therefore as important as the buyer experience, and it is often where first versions are weakest.
Listing management
Bulk edits, inventory sync from spreadsheets or their own store, and variant handling.
Order handling
Clear order queues, shipping label creation, tracking upload and cancellation workflows.
Payouts and statements
Transparent earnings, fees, refunds and payout schedules with downloadable statements.
Performance insights
Views, conversion, ratings and response times compared with category norms.
Promotions
Discounts, featured placements and campaign participation managed by the seller.
Messaging
Buyer conversations and support tickets in one inbox.
Marketplace legal and tax considerations
Marketplaces carry obligations that a single-seller store does not. In the United States, many states have marketplace facilitator laws that can make the platform responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax on third-party sales, and payment platforms must issue 1099-K forms to qualifying sellers. Terms of service, seller agreements, prohibited-item policies and privacy notices must be in place before launch. We build the data capture and reporting these obligations require and work with your tax and legal advisers, who confirm what applies to your business.
Measuring marketplace health
- Liquidity — share of searches or listings that lead to a transaction.
- Seller activation — share of onboarded sellers who make a first sale.
- Repeat rate — how often buyers and sellers come back.
- Dispute rate — problems per hundred orders, by category and seller.
Timeline and budget
| Marketplace | Typical timeline | Typical budget (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| WooCommerce or Shopify-based marketplace | 6–10 weeks | $15k – $40k |
| Custom marketplace MVP | 12–16 weeks | $50k – $100k |
