When Shopify is the right platform
- You want a reliable, hosted platform without managing servers or security patches
- Your team should be able to manage products and content without developers
- You sell physical or digital products in one or several markets
- You value a large app ecosystem and built-in payments
Need deep customisation of the catalogue, checkout or hosting? Compare with WooCommerce development.
Speed and conversion
- Lean themes — minimal JavaScript, optimised images and lazy loading.
- Fewer apps — we replace overlapping apps with theme features or one custom app.
- Conversion basics — clear product pages, trust signals, fast checkout and abandoned-cart flows.
- Analytics — GA4, Meta and Google Ads tracking set up and tested.
Shopify apps: fewer is usually better
The Shopify App Store makes it easy to add features, and many stores end up with twenty or more apps. Each one can inject scripts into your storefront, slowing page loads, and each has its own monthly fee and support quality. Overlapping apps also conflict — two review apps, two upsell tools, two pop-ups competing for attention.
During an audit we list every installed app, what it does, what it costs and its impact on page speed. Often several can be removed entirely, some features can be built into the theme with Shopify’s native sections and metafields, and a single custom app can replace a cluster of paid ones. The result is a faster store, lower monthly costs and fewer surprises when themes or apps update.
Shopify Plus and B2B
Shopify Plus adds features that matter to larger brands: checkout customisation through Checkout Extensibility and Shopify Functions, B2B features such as company accounts, price lists and payment terms, automation with Shopify Flow, and the ability to run several expansion stores. For wholesale and B2B sellers, native B2B on Plus can replace separate wholesale apps or portals, keeping retail and wholesale on one platform with shared inventory and reporting.
Theme development: build or customise?
Every Shopify store runs on a theme. The choice is between customising a well-built premium theme or building a custom theme from scratch.
| Approach | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Premium theme with light customisation | New stores, tight budgets, fast launches | Less distinctive; limited by the theme’s structure |
| Premium theme with significant customisation | Brands needing specific sections and features | Must manage theme updates carefully |
| Custom Online Store 2.0 theme | Established brands with unique design and merchandising needs | Higher upfront cost; fully tailored and lean |
| Headless storefront | Complex content and multi-channel needs | Highest cost and ownership responsibility |
Whichever route you choose, we build with sections and blocks so your team can create and rearrange pages in the theme editor without code.
Migrating to Shopify without losing rankings
Re-platforming is one of the riskiest moments for organic traffic. Shopify uses fixed URL patterns for products, collections and pages, so almost every old URL will change. A careful migration protects the search visibility you have earned.
-
Inventory
Crawl the current site and export analytics and Search Console data to find every URL that earns traffic or links.
-
Map
Map each old URL to its closest new equivalent and create 301 redirects in bulk.
-
Migrate data
Move products, variants, customers and order history with tested import scripts or migration tools.
-
Preserve content
Carry over titles, descriptions, headings, structured data and important on-page copy.
-
Verify after launch
Check redirects, submit sitemaps and monitor crawl errors and rankings for the following weeks.
Shopify Markets and international selling
Shopify Markets lets one store sell in several countries with local currencies, languages, domains or subfolders, duties and pricing. Set up correctly, it avoids running separate stores for each region. We configure markets, translations and hreflang tags, adjust prices by market where needed and connect local payment methods. For very different catalogues or legal entities per region, separate expansion stores can still be the cleaner option.
Shopify launch checklist
- Payments, taxes and shipping zones tested with real orders and refunds
- Domain, SSL and email sending authentication configured
- Policies, cookie consent and accessibility checks completed
- Analytics, conversion tracking and customer events verified
- Product feeds connected for Google and other sales channels
- Staff accounts with appropriate permissions
- Redirects live and old sitemap retired
Extending Shopify the right way
When apps and theme code are not enough, Shopify offers Functions for custom discounts, delivery and payment logic, checkout UI extensions for Plus stores and APIs for integrations with ERP, warehouse and marketing systems. We choose the lightest option that meets the requirement. For private or public apps, see Shopify app development; for custom storefronts, see headless commerce.
Connecting Shopify to your operations
As stores grow, the work behind each order becomes the bottleneck: inventory updates, purchase orders, fulfilment, invoices and customer service. Connecting Shopify to the systems that run those processes removes manual re-keying and errors.
| System | Typical data flow |
|---|---|
| ERP or accounting | Orders, refunds and payouts to the ledger; stock and costs back to Shopify |
| Warehouse or 3PL | Orders out for fulfilment; tracking numbers and stock levels back |
| Inventory planning | Sales velocity in; purchase orders and forecasts out |
| Customer service | Order history and customer details inside the helpdesk |
| Marketing | Customer events and segments to email, SMS and advertising platforms |
We use Shopify’s APIs and webhooks, or proven connector apps where they fit, and build custom middleware only when requirements demand it. See ERP integration for deeper back-office connections.
Shopify development pitfalls to avoid
- Installing an app for every small feature, slowing the store and increasing monthly costs
- Editing a purchased theme so heavily that it can no longer be updated
- Forgetting redirects and structured data during a migration
- Leaving tracking and consent setup until after launch
- Ignoring accessibility, which affects customers and creates legal risk
Questions to ask a Shopify partner
- Will you customise an existing theme or build a custom one, and why?
- Which apps do you recommend, and what will they cost each month?
- How will our team edit pages and run promotions after launch?
- How do you handle redirects, tracking and accessibility before go-live?
