Job portals that serve both sides of the market
A job portal is a two-sided platform. Candidates need to find relevant roles quickly and apply without friction; employers need qualified applicants, simple posting and clear value for what they pay. Generic job board plugins handle the basics, but they struggle once you need niche-specific filters, screening questions, applicant tracking, multiple revenue streams or integrations with employer systems.
We build job portals for industry and regional niches, staffing agencies and companies running their own career sites at scale. The goal is always the same: a platform search engines can index well, candidates enjoy using and employers are willing to pay for.
Problems we solve
- Generic job board plugins that cannot handle niche filters or workflows
- Low-quality applications because screening is not built into the flow
- Employers posting elsewhere because posting and billing are clumsy
- Job pages that search engines and Google for Jobs do not pick up properly
- Manual work importing jobs from employer feeds and ATS systems

Search, SEO and the cold-start problem
Search is the heart of a job portal. We use PostgreSQL full-text search for smaller boards and a dedicated engine such as OpenSearch, Elasticsearch or Typesense when you need typo tolerance, synonyms (for example “RN” and “registered nurse”) and fast faceted filtering across large job volumes.
Every job page includes JobPosting structured data so it can appear in Google’s job search experience, and expired jobs are handled correctly rather than left as dead pages. Category and location landing pages are generated only where there are enough live jobs to make them useful, which avoids thin pages that hurt rankings.
New job boards face a cold-start problem: candidates will not come without jobs, and employers will not pay without candidates. Common solutions include importing jobs from partner feeds, offering free postings during launch, and building a niche community or newsletter before charging. We design the platform so these tactics are easy to switch on and off.
| Revenue model | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Pay per post | Employers buy single listings or packs | Boards with occasional hirers |
| Subscription | Monthly plans with posting and CV search limits | Agencies and frequent hirers |
| Featured & boosted | Upgrades for visibility and email promotion | Most boards, as an add-on |
| Pay per application or click | Charge for performance | High-traffic boards with feed partners |
Timeline and budget
| Scope | Typical timeline | Typical budget (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Niche job board MVP | 8–12 weeks | $30k – $70k |
| Full recruitment marketplace | 4–8 months | $80k – $200k |

Features candidates expect today
- Mobile-first search and apply — most job seekers browse on phones
- Apply with a saved profile or an uploaded CV in under a minute
- Salary ranges and clear job details, which many US states now require in postings
- Instant and daily job alerts matched to saved searches
- Application status updates so candidates are not left guessing
Every extra field in the application form reduces completions. We keep the first step short and let employers add screening questions only where they genuinely improve applicant quality.
Employer tools that justify the price
Employers keep paying when the platform saves them time. Beyond posting, that means a simple applicant pipeline with stages, ratings and notes, bulk actions, shareable shortlists for hiring managers and email templates for rejections and interview invites. For agencies and larger employers, we add team accounts, branded company pages and exports or integrations into their own applicant tracking system so no data is re-keyed.
Monetisation models for job boards
A job portal needs a revenue model that matches its niche and the stage it is at. Most successful boards combine two or three of these:
| Model | How it works | Works best when |
|---|---|---|
| Pay per post | Employers buy individual listings or credit packs | Early stage, occasional hirers |
| Subscriptions | Monthly plans with listing limits and extra tools | Employers hire regularly |
| Featured listings | Paid upgrades for visibility and highlighting | The board already has strong traffic |
| Résumé database access | Employers pay to search and contact candidates | You have a large, active candidate base |
| Pay per click or application | Employers pay for performance | Traffic volume is high and measurable |
Moderation, trust and quality
Fake listings and spam destroy a job board’s reputation quickly. We build moderation into the platform from the start:
- Employer verification by business email domain or manual review
- Automatic checks for scam patterns, such as requests for payment or personal data
- Reporting tools for candidates with a review queue for admins
- Expiry and refresh rules so stale jobs do not clutter results
- Salary and location fields required where local pay-transparency rules apply
- Duplicate detection for jobs imported from multiple sources
Launch checklist for a new job board
-
Choose the niche
A clear industry, role type or region makes it easier to attract both sides.
-
Seed the jobs
Imports, partnerships or free listings so candidates find value on day one.
-
Structured data
Job posting schema and sitemaps so listings can appear in Google for Jobs.
-
Candidate alerts
Email alerts that bring candidates back when new matching jobs are posted.
-
Measure
Track applications per job, employer renewals and candidate return visits from launch.
Matching candidates to jobs
Search gets candidates to relevant jobs; matching brings relevant jobs to candidates. Start with transparent rules — skills, location, salary range, seniority and work type — and add machine-learning ranking once there is enough application data to learn from. Matching should always be explainable, both so candidates trust it and so employers can see why a profile was suggested.
- Saved searches and alerts tuned to each candidate
- Skills taxonomy that normalises job titles and synonyms
- Bias checks on ranking so protected characteristics never influence results
- Feedback loops from employer shortlisting and candidate applications
Matching quality is reviewed regularly with real employer feedback, because what counts as a good match changes as the board, its employers and the job market evolve.
